21.08.2021
Committee: Human Rights Council
Topic: The Commission of Crimes in the Name of Freedom of Expression and Religion
When? 21.08.2021 from 10:00 until 16:00
Where? Zoom
Crimes against humanity are taking place in a rapid pace, with fear being a major character of our society, manifested in the progress of humanity. Crimes are committed in the name of religion and belief, violating individual rights to freedom of expression and life, providing us the question of how to balance the two: Freedom of expression and freedom of religion, two indispensable rights important for the flourishing of democratic societies. Both rights provide the foundation for the establishment of basic democratic principles, the facilitation of dialogue and the exchange of ideas and opinions. The reality is much different than what the correct practice of these rights theorize to support: Fundamental human rights are sacrificed with governments globally seemingly having their hands bound to undertake any action against it. Legal instruments and further research, along with increased awareness, could contribute to the adoption of a more effective approach in our further fight to eradicate this problem. In this committee, delegates will discuss the core of both the rights of freedom of expression and religion, as well as previous actions undertaken to resolve the issue, in order to strike a clear balance between the freedom of expression and freedom of religious belief. Join us on the 21st of August at the BIMUN/SINUB MiniMUN as we simulate the United Nations Human Rights Council for a day with the topic of "The Commission of Crimes in the Name of Freedom of Expression and Religion".
