The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification is the only legally binding international agreement combining environment and development in order to achieve sustainability. Established in 1994 the UNCCD as of 2018 aims to restore vast expanses of degraded land, potentially improving the livelihoods of around 1.3 billion people.
